Client Kemp Hospice

The Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice is an important facility providing palliative care to terminally ill patients in a non-hospital setting.  In 2011, the hospice board approached CGS about creating a new type of space that would provide quiet, contemplative respite for patients and their families in the form of an outdoor pavilion.

The pavilion has been carefully designed, respecting that users may be extremely sensitive to light, breezes, and temperature.  The design places the pavilion in a stand of mature trees with unobstructed views of their gardens and water features through floor to ceiling glass, while generous overhangs temper direct light.  A two-sided fireplace connects to a covered terrace providing warmth and ambience while a built-in seating nook offers an opportunity for intimate, casual family gatherings and a respite from the high-stress situations experienced by facility users.
